2020 Bay Area BioGENEius Challenge is going virtual

The 2020 BioGENEius Challenge is open to students in grades 9-12 that have created biotechnology-related science fair projects. Student applications are due April 2 (corrected date).
The Challenge is a joint effort put on by the California Life Sciences Institute, Amgen & the Biotechnology Institute to recognize exceptional research by high school students in the life sciences.

Even though the 2020 California Science & Engineering Fair has been cancelled, we will generate a list of qualified students because of student interest.  It will be published on our website and forwarded to CSEF to publish on theirs.  Because of the virtual fair, it is taking longer than usual for the grand prize and other special judging results to be finalized.  The algorithm used to determine the CSEF qualification list needs these results, among others. Once they are ready, we will be able to generate and publish the list.  Thank you for your patience!

Winners will be posted here when the results have been finalized. Meanwhile, congratulations to the participants and many thanks to the volunteers and sponsors who made the Virtual 2020 Synopsys Championship possible.

When you’re in your Special Awards judging session, Chime may close if it sees no activity. If you see the feedback screen, please reload the page and join your meeting again. Perhaps set a reminder to move around and make some noise. The interval is 30 minutes.

On Thursday, 3/12, from 10 to noon, you have one more chance to log in for a practice video conference session. The Chime Made Easy quick guide has Test IDs for Students and Judges. The Help Desk will open at 9: 669-212-7244.

As of 10:44 PM the emails with student links for the video conferences have all been sent out. There have already been some bouncebacks. We will give priority to any request for a re-send that arrives after 11 PM. Please check your spam folder first and then email or call with your project number and a reliable email address. The Help Desk will open at 9 AM tomorrow.

Get started with the NEW *Chime Made Easy* quick guide or get the details in Using Chime for Students and Using Chime for Judges. These are short guides to the secure collaboration service that you’ll use to practice on Wednesday, 3/11, and for judging interviews on Thursday, 3/12.

Thank you for uploading to the project folders. This morning the scheduling team could start the complicated task of assigning 15-minute interview time slots between 12:30 and 5:30 on Thursday. An example of a Project Judging schedule is available here.  Students – watch for email Wednesday afternoon!

The Frequently Asked Questions include what to do if you didn’t receive a link to your Google Docs folder or the link you received doesn’t seem to work. Also formats for your project documents and preliminary information about the web conference practice sessions.

To our eager students, here is a link to a simple sample of what your Google Drive folder will look like

We will get the links out to you as soon as we can. Please upload by 11:30 PM, Monday, March 9th.
Let’s do this!
