2024 Thermo Fisher JIC Top 300 and Top 30

The Top 300 Thermo Fisher JIC semi-finalists were selected from 1862 competitors and announced on September 4th. Each received a $125 award from DoD STEM. Eighteen students from the Synopsys Championship were among the Top 300 and are listed below. A complete list of the Top 300 Thermo Fisher JIC can be found at Society for Science.

Sophie Tong from Challenger Middlefield – Palo Alto and Tina Jin from The Harker School in San Jose were among the Top 30 Thermo Fisher JIC finalists. See full press release. Finalists will compete in the Thermo Fisher JIC Finals Week in Washington, D.C. from October 25 – October 30.

Congratulations to Tina Jin, 14, from San Jose, Calif., for winning the $25,000 Thermo Fisher Scientific ASCEND (Aspiring Scientists Cultivating Exciting New Discoveries) Award, the top prize in the competition for her research that proved the ability of animal bones to filter water, in addition to demonstrating leadership, collaboration and critical thinking skills throughout the competition and to Sophie Tong, 14, Palo Alto, Calif., for winning the $10,000 DoD STEM Talent Award for her project that sought to improve the safety of vehicles, such as airplanes and self-driving cars, by understanding how vision is degraded in dark, foggy conditions. She then developed algorithms to accurately analyze scenes during bad weather.
